UK is the second most preferred country for students who would like to study English or pursue higher education. If you are planning to study a course in the UK and if you are required to have a visa to enter the UK, you have 2 different visa options; Student Visitor Visa and TIER 4 Student Visa.

Student Visitor Visa


Student Visitor visa is required for students attending to courses with duration less than 6 months. The course would be work related or a language course. If you are planning to attend a language course lasts more than 6 months up to 11 months, than you can apply for Student Visitor Visa as well.

What you need and what you get with a Student Visitor Visa:

• You must be over 18.
• You must be able to show you have enough finances in order to support yourself during your stay (for transportation, food, accommodation etc.).
• You are not allowed to work.
• You are not allowed to apply nor receive any government benefits.
• You are not allowed to extend General Student Visitor Visa, for most cases.
• You can not change your Student Visitor Visa type while you are in the UK. You must apply from your country you live.
• You have to leave the UK after almost immediately at the end of your course.
• You can not register for public health system (NHS) and can not utilize/use health system services for free.
• In case of an emergency affecting your health you can go to NHS hospitals’ (public hospitals) emergency departments. You have to pay for any services etc. you receive. It is advised to have a travel/health insurance
TIER 4 (General) STUDENT VISA

If you are planning to study further on top your formal education, at a higher education institution like a university, you need to get a TIER 4 (General) Student Visa. Let’s say you would like to study law, engineering or medicine to receive a Masters or Doctorate degree (Postgraduate level we call this in the UK) or you will study to receive a Bachelors degree (Undergraduate level we call this in the UK), you will need a TIER 4 Student Visa.

If you would like to study English as a foreign language you can apply for a TIER 4 (General) Student Visa.

What do you need and what you get with a TIER 4 (General) Student Visa:

• You must be over 16
• You must be applying to study at a course with level at or above National Qualification Frame Work 3 (NQF 3)
• You must get 40 points in point assessment (30 points for a confirmation of acceptance of study (CAS) and 10 points for having enough money).
• You must show that you have enough money to cover your study and living costs.

o If you are planning to live in inner London, living costs are calculated £800 a month.
o If you are planning to live in outer London, living costs are calculated £600 a month.
• If you are studying at a higher education institution and if your course level is equal or above NQF 6 you can work:

o You can work part time, up to 20 hours a week
o You can work full time during weekends and vacations
o Do a work placement as a part of your study

• If you are studying at a higher education institution and if your course level is below NQF 6 you can work:

o You can work part time, up to 10 hours a week
o You can work full time during weekends and vacations
o Do a work placement as a part of your study

• You are not allowed to apply nor receive any government benefits.
• You can apply to extend your TIER 4 General Student Visa for different cases.
• You can apply from within the UK to change your TIER 4 General Student Visa.
• You can stay up to 60 days if your course finishes early and your visa is valid for more than 6 months. If your visa finishes less than 6 months, then you can stay until end of your visa.v • You can register for public health system (NHS) and can utilize/use health system services for free.
